Where World Kindness Day came from

In 1997, a group of kindness organisations from around the world met in Tokyo and formed what became the World Kindness Movement. A year later, on November 13, 1998, they marked the first World Kindness Day — a shared date for encouraging good deeds across borders, faiths, and politics.

The idea was deliberately simple: kindness is the one value nearly every culture already agrees on, so give it a day and let people fill it however they want. Today it's observed in dozens of countries through school programs, workplace campaigns, and community drives.

RAKS exists for the other 364 days too. The point of a ripple isn't the single act — it's the person who receives it and decides to pass it on.

12 ripples for World Kindness Day

Pick one. Do it. Log it. Watch what it starts.

  • Pay for the person behind you

Coffee, tolls, groceries — leave a note that says “keep it going.”

  • Write a real thank-you

A teacher, a nurse, a coach. Name the specific thing they did.

  • Check on someone who went quiet

One text: “thinking of you, how are you really?”

  • Leave a generous tip with a message

Kindness lands harder when it's named.

  • Donate the thing you keep meaning to donate

Coats, books, canned goods — today is the day.

  • Give a public compliment

Praise someone in front of their team or family.

  • Buy from a struggling local shop

Then leave an honest five-star review.

  • Clean up a shared space

A block, a park bench, a break room. No one has to know.

  • Offer your seat, spot, or place in line

Small friction for you, big relief for someone else.

  • Cook or deliver a meal

New parents, grieving neighbours, anyone stretched thin.

  • Forgive a small debt

Money, a favour, an old grudge. Let it go out loud.

  • Teach someone something free

Fifteen minutes of what you know can change a week.
